It’s goal-setting time for business. Here are 3 tips that can make attaining your goals a sure thing!
First, the basics. If you’ve worked with TAB or EOS for any amount of time, you’re already proficient at setting meaningful, achievable goals. A quick overview…
Make sure your goal is something you really want or need to accomplish. Is it a goal you have some passion for? Will it improve your company and/or business? Keep it simple and specific enough to achieve. It’s better to have a few reachable goals than one large, broad one.
How will you measure success? What metrics can identify accomplishment? To over-simplify, “losing weight” might be an okay goal but “losing 10 pounds” is measurable. Put a time element in place to help with continuous progress.
Now here are three tips that can power up your goal-setting process.
- Enlist a partner. Someone who might have a similar goal for their business, or who would appreciate your support to help them accomplish a goal. Pick someone who’s already a mentor or supporter of yours. Verbalizing your goal to someone else can add a layer of accountability and encouragement, along the way. Communicate your progress and/or setbacks. It’s much easier to neglect a goal when you’re the only one who knows what you’re working on.
- Recognize the suffering. It sounds harsh but most goals worth achieving will involve some level of sacrifice or pain. For example, you may have to devote time you don’t think you have or add to your already stressed workload. Using the weight loss example… you may miss the salt or sugar you’re going to give up. Or, you may not enjoy the hunger pangs that set in periodically. If you realize up front that those things are going to happen, and you recognize and accept them, you’ll be less likely to give up or procrastinate when confronted with the discomfort.
- Celebrate milestones. Identify the small accomplishments that lead to the greater goal. Give yourself a reward or recognition for accomplishing the small steps along the way. If your goal is to lose 10 pounds, you’re going to get there one pound at a time. Enjoy the process not just the end result.
Setting new goals is exciting and can sharpen your business. Accomplishing them is rewarding and satisfying. Following these tips will turbocharge the process and make the difference between frustration and goal attainment.
